The Flughafen DB repository containing a large MySQL data set for training, learning and testing. Flughafen means airport in the German language. We used an airport and flights related scenario for writing a German book for the Rheinwerk Verlag. In the 800 pages book we used the data sets for describing MySQL concepts and the administration of MySQL servers.

The dataset is available in English and in German. A German description is available below. There are two sets with the same schema but different amounts of data. The smaller set can be imported quickly, the larger one might take some time depending on your hardware.

• This dataset is also used for learning purposes by MySQL / Oracle.

The traditional way of importing a dataset is using mysqldump. We used gzip to reduce the size of the datasets and split the larger set in smaller chunks. You can use the following steps to load the dataset.

# Change to the directory with the zipped dump
cd english

# Concatenate the whole data set in one gzipped file 
cat flughafendb_large.sql.gz.part-* > flughafendb_large.sql.gz

# Create a new database in your MySQL instance
mysql -u your-user -h 127.0.0.1 -e "CREATE DATABASE flughafendb_large;"

# Import the dataset
zcat ./english/flughafendb_original_gross.sql.gz | mysql -u root -h 127.0.0.1 flughafendb_large

There exists a new tool called MySQL Shell which can import data using parallel threads. This tool is much faster than mysqldump and it is compatible with MySQL 5.7 and MySQL 8. A blog post about the performance can be found on mysqlserverteam.com. The official documentation is here.

The folder mysql-shell-dumps contains data dumps that have been created using MySQL Shell 8.0.21.

The folder containing the large data set is ./mysql-shell-dumps/flughafendb_large. The folder docker of this repository contains a docker-compose.yml file you can use for starting a fresh MySQL 8 container. Connect to the database and create the database with CREATE DATABASE flughafendb_large; and enable the load from local files ET GLOBAL local_infile=ON;.

Then start mysqlsh for instance like this: mysqlsh root@127.0.0.1:3308 and run the following command. util.loadDump("./mysql-shell-dumps/flughafendb_large", {threads: 4})

This will import the dump using 4 parallel threads.

You can create a MySQL Shell dump from an existing database as follows:

util.dumpSchemas(["flughafendb_large"],"/tmp/flughafendb_large", {threads: 4, bytesPerChunk: "200M"})

Smaller updates and bug fixes can be applied by loading one of the files english/bug_fixes_flughafendb_[large|small].sql after importing the dataset.

Kleinere Updates und Bugfixes können durch das Laden des passenden Skriptes eingespielt werden, nachdem das Datenset geladen wurde: ./deutsch/bug_fixes_flughafendb_[klein|gross].sql.

The directory docker contains a docker-compose.yml file which you can use to experiment with the database. The Docker Compose file automatically imports the ./deutsch/flughafendb_klein.sql.gz database dump. It also applies some settings for faster importing which should not be used in production. Adapt the file to your needs, the following commands show how to start a MySQL container from the Git base directory: docker compose -f ./docker/docker-compose.yml up.
